When it comes to creating more sustainable homeware, how a product is made matters just as much as what it’s made from. At Sophie Home, we work predominantly with knitted cotton - not just for its softness and durability, but because it’s a naturally low-waste way of producing textiles.
Unlike many traditional fabric production methods, knitting allows us to create products in a way that minimises excess material from the very beginning.
Made to shape, not cut to size
Many textiles are woven in large sheets and then cut into shapes, which inevitably creates offcuts and waste. Knitting works differently. Pieces can be made closer to their final shape on the machine, meaning there’s far less cutting involved, and therefore far less material wasted in the process.
This is the case for our Kids toys which we’ve painstakingly made sure that they are knitted as close to their final shape and size as possible. Our reusable dishcloths, cushions and throws are all knitted to their exact size, meaning no waste at all! Our manufacturers also calculate exactly how much yarn will be needed for every order and product so we don't over-dye and over-produce yarn either. Great, right?

Durable design that lasts
Low-waste production doesn’t stop at the manufacturing stage. Knitted textiles are naturally durable and flexible, meaning they hold their shape well and stand up to everyday use. Products that last longer don’t need replacing as often, reducing waste over time as well as during production. The nature of knit means we can make the most of the materials we use, creating pieces that are both practical and considered without unnecessary excess.
Small choices, bigger impact
Choosing knitted textiles might seem like a small detail, but it’s one that contributes to a more thoughtful way of making products. By reducing waste at the point of production and creating designs that last, we’re able to take a more responsible approach - without compromising on colour, comfort, or quality.
Good design isn’t just about how something looks or feels, it’s about how it’s made. And for us, knitting is a simple, effective way to do things a little better.
