A little scared of colour? You’re certainly not the only one out there. Our Founder and designer, Sophie, however... you could pretty much call her a pro. She’s immersed in colour every day while she’s designing for Sophie Home, and loves a bit of colour in her personal life, too. So whether you’re embarking on a full house makeover, or just wanting to inject a little here and there to spruce things up, these are Sophie’s 3 top tips for adding colour to your home.
1. Start with soft furnishings
Sounds simple, right? It is. Cushions, throws, and other home textiles are the easiest way to experiment with colour, without overwhelming the overall scheme. Small injections, big impact. They’re low commitment, easy to swap out, and instantly change the mood of a room. Try pairing unexpected colours together — that’s often where the magic happens. A pop of contrast on the sofa can lift an entire space. One of our bestselling colours is our citrus yellow. Check out the Bruten or Deko designs in Citrus - they might just win you over.
2. Build a palette, not a rainbow
Using colour well isn’t about using all the colours — it’s about choosing a small palette and repeating it. Pick two or three shades you love and echo them across different pieces. In the kitchen for example, you could add a bold teal and pale blue tea towel, one of those colours can be echoed in a (let’s say baby blue) kettle or toaster, then you see it again in your Sophie Home dishcloths ;) Once you’ve got those sorted, you can keep the rest of the room a little more pared back. It creates cohesion without feeling matchy-matchy.
3. Let neutrals do some of the work
Heard of the ‘unexpected red’ theory? In reality that works with just about any colour when it’s the main focal point of a room. Achieving it lies in pairing your bold colour choice with a majority neutral room. Neutral walls, floors, or larger furniture pieces give colourful homeware space to breathe and make the colour feel intentional rather than overwhelming. Look to our Bruten cushion in Navy for a visual of this. Navy, cream, a little pale pink (we’ll count that as a neutral) and then the pop of red. Intentional, impactful.
“Colour should feel fun, not intimidating. Trust your instincts, play around, and remember: if it makes you smile, you’re probably doing it right. They’re words I like to live by, anyway!” - Sophie
